Mando strikes Vanth's jetpack to send him flying to safety. He knows to close his pod just before Mando wastes Gor Koresh's guards with the whistling birds and hides in a pot as the Krayt dragon passes through Mos Pelgo. Jon Favreau, the show's creator (also the OG Marvel Cinematic Universe director) wrote and directed the first episode. The first season of “The Mandalorian” relied a lot on guest stars like Olyphant, who usually weren’t announced to the press ahead of time. He also gives himself away by the way he stands, with one hip thrust sideways, skinny legs leaning at a steep angle, arms afloat at his sides … as though he’s ready at a moment’s notice to dive to the ground while firing a blaster. In Episode 7, Mando and Cara Dune were arm-wrestling for fun when The Child suddenly used his powers to Force choke Cara. When the Mandalorian and the Child visit a shady character named Gor Koresh (John Leguizamo) at an underground ax fight, Favreau lingers over the grubby details of a crumbling neighborhood with graffitied walls and an off-the-books club filled with creepy aliens. Boba Fett, moments before his encounter with the sarlacc in Return of the Jedi. "I guess every once in a while, both suns shine on a womp rat's tail," Vanth says of his good fortune, in reference to Tatooine's twin suns. The second season of the big Disney+ hit "The Mandalorian" has finally arrived, and fans can't wait to binge the latest foray into the Star Wars universe created by George Lucas. It's not canon anymore, but you battle a Krayt dragon on Tatooine. It’s nifty to look at, but it takes a long time to set up a fairly routine man-vs.-monster shootout. Olyphant plays Cobb Vanth, the title character in this season’s debut episode, “The Marshal.” The show’s hero, Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) — the Mandalorian himself — meets Cobb when he rides into the Tatooine mining community of Mos Pelgo in search of another member of the Mandalorian order of warriors and bounty hunters. They'll look much older at this point -- they were genetically engineered to age at an accelerated rate so they could go to war quicker (pretty dark and weird, right?). This episode also presents it in a super cool flashback. Yum. Even in the “Star Wars” universe, the man who played Seth Bullock and Raylan Givens looks like … well, like a marshal. Peli also owns R5-D4, the red astromech droid Luke's Uncle Owen tried to buy in A New Hope. Vanth promises to give Mando the armor if he helps take out the Krayt. Discussion threads can be closed at any time at our discretion. It's unclear if it was the same sarlacc we saw in Return of the Jedi -- that was the Great Pit of Carkoon, but there are multiple sarlacc pits on Tatooine. What's not clear is who these Jedi will be. We saw young Boba getting up to (occasionally murderous) mischief in The Clone Wars, and his career as a bounty hunter was in full swing by the time of the Original Trilogy, until he got eaten like a sucker. But there’s an assuredness to what Favreau and his cast and crew are doing here, calling back once again to classic movie adventures, in much the same way George Lucas did with the first “Star Wars” film. He's extremely Force sensitive, so it would make sense if he was Yoda's son, but we've only met two other members of his species â Yoda and Yaddle, both Jedi. In Return of the Jedi, Han Solo blindly hit the same jetpack and sent Boba Fett into the sarlacc. That secrecy preserved what turned out to be a wonderful surprise: the introduction a fun new character, called “the Child” on the show but immediately dubbed “Baby Yoda” by the fans. If you're feeling nostalgic, it's available on PS4 (and should be playable on PS5 via backwards compatibility). Cobb Vanth has some delightful Hollywood hair under that Boba Fett helmet. A massive Krayt dragon rumbles through the town, traveling under the sand like the horrible beasties in Tremors (a movie that terrified me as a kid). Can't wait to see a cosplayer create it. Favreau is credited as both the writer and director, and he sets the right tone from the start with a good, pulpy opening sequence. Was Cobb Vanth wearing Boba Fett’s old armor? We know of at least one surviving clone: Commander Rex was present at the Battle of Endor, as seen in the last episode of Rebels. It would be a bit too convenient for them to all be related, but we know the species is likely endangered; otherwise, Moff Gideon would not be so desperate to capture him. Since the infamous bounty hunter fell into the sarlacc in Return of the Jedi and is busy being digested for 1,000 years, he won't need any armor … right? He appears to be wearing Tusken Raider gear, and turns around to reveal the face of Boba Fett (Temuera Morrison). When Cobb invites the Mandalorian to sit down and have a drink, he pours two glasses of a sickly blue-colored cocktail called “spotchka,” which looks like (and may actually be) fermented bantha milk. Read more: The Mandalorian season 2 delivers major surprise Star Wars cameo. I did catch one thing though: I couldn’t help noticing that the phrasing Peli Motto uses when she’s asked about Mos Pelgo — saying, “I haven’t heard that name in a while” — echoes what Ben Kenobi says to Luke Skywalker when he’s asked about the name “Obi-Wan.” Tatooine just seems to be a planet where people and places are easily lost. The Mandalorian takes place after Darth Vader is killed but before Rey is even born, and at this point most people think the Jedi are just a myth. Decades before the events of The Mandalorian, Jango was recruited by Count Dooku to serve as the genetic template for the clone army used by the Galactic Republic, as part of Darth Sidious' super convoluted plot to wipe out the Jedi. If The Child is raised by Mando or Ahsoka, does that mean he'll sound like a Mandalorian instead? Even though the show is called The Mandalorian, it does feel like it's building toward a full introduction of the Jedi. And if this season is as good as the last one was, they’ll keep doing that one small step at a time, side-by-side with some of Hollywood’s greatest character actors. The Imps want Baby Yoda and would pay Boba serious money for his help in hunting Mando down. Season 1 built to a satisfyingly epic showdown, featuring most of the series’s major characters. Vanth and Mando (Vando?) It's actually the first time we've seen Boba's face as an adult, but it's a very familiar one since he's a clone of the late bounty hunter Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones. Yoda's "backwards" way of talking is one of his most famous characteristics, and Yoda's puppeteer Frank Oz told BBC in 2011 that it's a cultural marker of the species. Seriously, the floating pod is a part of The Child's character at this point. When Vanth is briefing the townspeople, the lights on his armor are oddly hypnotic. The shot as Mando blows up the Krayt is magnificent -- the sand ripples and dust is kicked up. This episode adds some refreshing nuance. So sure, “The Marshal” could be a little more taut. The Armorer's quote about bringing The Child to the Jedi is featured heavily in the Season 2 trailer, and it wouldn't feel like a Star Wars title without a glimpse of a lightsaber. So Mando's inadvertently painted a big(ger) target on his and Baby Yoda's backs -- we might see Boba hunting him down solo, or he could team up with Moff Gideon and the Imperial Remnant. Mando instantly put a stop to it, but it suggests that if The Child isn't trained properly, he could end up hurting someone. Vanth's tricked out speeder bike is made of a chunk of pod racer -- it looks kinda like Anakin's one from. The reality is "Baby Yoda" is a misnomer granted to the character by the internet, which is why Disney's official name for Baby Yoda is "The Child." This reminded me of the 2002 game Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, in which you play as Jango Fett (Boba's dad). 2020 Bustle Digital Group. Almost a year ago, the “Star Wars” spinoff series “The Mandalorian” debuted on Disney+ with a first episode that had been kept mostly under wraps — unseen by the critics and largely unspoiled by advertising. (When her offer is rejected, she tells Mando to let her know “if this thing ever divides or buds.”) And then Din is off to Mos Pelgo, mounted on a speeder-bike that rides steadily over the sand dunes … like a horse crossing Monument Valley in old John Ford western. He's already 50 years old and still talks in gibberish, so it's possible we'll never hear Baby Yoda talk on The Mandalorian, but it's still an amusing prospect to think about. However, Mando's determined to take back the armor and totally willing to gun Vanth down for it until a bigger threat emerges. He learns of someone on Tatooine, which weirds him out since he and his little buddy were already there but heard nothing about it. It’s up to the Mandalorian and the Child to start putting things back in place. In the episode's closing moments, we see a mysterious someone watching Mando from a ridge. It turns out the man in Mandalorian armor isn't a Mandalorian at all -- it's Cobb Vanth (Timothy Olyphant, who previously played gunslingers in Deadwood and Justified). I'm quite jealous of Vanth's lovely Hollywood hair -- in real life, it'd be a mess after taking off that helmet. It tuns out that our Mando has been misinformed. He may be a bona fide internet phenomenon, but we really don't know that much about Baby Yoda. Despite being a toddler, he can already Force lift mudhorns, choke people, and heal wounds. (Favreau and Disney do like their little surprises.) The Mandalorian season 2 episode 1 recap: Easter eggs, Baby Yoda moments. The bulk of this chapter has to do with Vanth and Djarin working together with a cadre of Tusken Raiders to save their region from a Krayt dragon: a kind of giant underground worm-thing that eats living creatures and vomits up torrents of venom. The length of “The Marshal” is somewhat worrisome. The scene pays off well, too, with the Child zipping up into his little floating egg while Mando clobbers his way through every thug in the room. When criminal goons rolled into Mos Pelgo following the destruction of the second Death Star (roughly five years prior to The Mandalorian), Vanth escaped and bought Fett's armor from some Jawas. It seems likely that Boba was the mysterious person who, Join us next Friday for more Easter eggs and observations after. When Baby Yoda floated onscreen last year, everyone had to puzzle over the disturbing implication that maybe the wizened Yoda had sex. If so, is Boba Fett the other Mandalorian on Tatooine that Din Djarin is meant to find? By the end of the weekend, the fandom will undoubtedly have documented them all, so I recommend doing some Googling if that’s something you’re into. Baby Yoda joins Mando on all his adventures in episode 1 of The Mandalorian season 2. The Krayt dragon apparently ate a sarlacc and took over its lair. And there’s something else going on, too — it was reflected both in bits of dialogue, as when Peli gripes that she doesn’t even know “who to complain to” about her creaky R5 unit, and in longer expository interludes, like Cobb’s story about the evil consortium that swooped into Mos Pelgo on the night the Death Star blew up. Season 1 episodes of “The Mandalorian” typically clocked in at between 30 to 40 minutes. He then strutted about wearing it, to keep the town safe in the lawless post-Empire Tatooine. How he got out and what he's been up to for the last five years is unknown, but he'll probably be wanting his armor back. There are none of his kind living in Mos Pelgo, only a loping lawman who got hired to protect a town partly because he happened to buy some old Mandalorian armor off some Jawas. Cool, and mad irresponsible. The first episode of Season 2, released on Friday, suggests that the Disney+ space western probably won’t move far, far away from what worked last year.
