Whatever you think of the Disney-era sequel trilogy that ended with The Rise of Skywalker, Lucas wasn’t involved in its creation the way he was with his animated baby, which he financed himself. There was a lot for the final episode of The Clone Wars to accomplish--namely how Ahsoka Tano would not only escape the Star Destroyer full of Clone Troopers trying to kill her due to Order 66 (the order to kill all Jedi) but how Darth Maul would make it out alive.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars finale recap: Ahsoka's adventure ends in 'Victory and Death' Fighting back. "Victory and Death" picked up with where the previous episode left off, with Ahsoka and Captain Rex attempting to escape the Venator while being hunted by a large group of Clone Troopers who have been ordered to kill Tano under Order 66. The Mandalorian just introduced a mysterious new character, but who is it? From the get-go, there is something that feels different and special about the way siege (spread across the episodes “Old Friends Not Forgotten,” “The Phantom Apprentice,” “Shattered” and the series finale “Victory and Death”) is presented, which makes it feel more like a theatrical film than an episode of TV.

But this image is the send-off for the master-apprentice relationship that endeared many fans as well as won over skeptics across seven seasons of The Clone Wars and echoes Ahsoka and Skywalker’s lack of closure in Star Wars Rebels, the successor show to Clone Wars. With the Skywalker Saga now over, the spin-off movies on pause, and the TV shows (outside of the Obi-Wan show) centered around new, Disney-era characters, we’re truly entering a new chapter for the Star Wars. Those final shots in “Victory and Death” call forward to Vader and Ahsoka’s face-to-face lightsaber confrontation in the Star Wars Rebels season 2 finale “Twilight of the Apprentice,” which takes place on the crimson stage of a Sith Temple on Malachor.

The the owl-like Convor bird encircling the gravesite in ”Victory and Death” will acquire a special connection in Rebels, signify Ahsoka’s salvation. We also see the Star Wars title card change from the usual regal yellow to an ominous stark red, bringing to mind the original poster for Revenge of the Jedi (which later became Return of the Jedi). While she does turn out to be a puzzle piece that helps young Luke unmask Anakin Skywalker from his Sith shell, Ahsoka has accepted that it is not her burden to save Skywalker.
Ahsoka Tano operates within the Rebellion, as depicted in Star Wars Rebels. Ahsoka was the only link the character still had to his old life. Vader doesn't say a word as he inspects and powers on the lightsaber, but this is clearly a turning point for the character. It's a somber note to end the series on. And we even get an use of the mantra “I am one with the Force and the Force is with me,” as heard in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.
The return of Maul’s original live-action performer, Ray Park, and the casting of The Mandalorian‘s stunt-woman Lauren Mary Kim providing motion-capture performance for Maul and Ahsoka, made their lightsaber duel one that fans won’t be able to forget anytime soon. Back on the planet that the Star Destroyer crashed onto, none other than Darth Vader--the former Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka's one-time Jedi master--arrives at the wreckage, flanked by Snowtroopers.

The lighting, composition and detail not only of the stunning fight scenes look better than ever, starting with the opening fight on Yerbana which seems taken straight out of a Skywalker Saga film (complete with a more extensive use of Williams’ score). Lucas would drop in with new plot points, as he did with the return of Darth Maul, who is the main villain in the last episodes of the show. Tellingly, in Rebels, the Sith Lord falls back on his Vader identity and decides to annihilate her, to remove any visages of his humanity. If you haven't watched the final episode of the series, "Victory and Death," you should stop now as we are going to dive deep into spoiler territory.
Darth Maul's escape from the Star Destroyer wasn't as emotional as Ahsoka's but it was just as thrilling. And for a moment, we believe that he could be saved. In the established timeline, Darth Vader continues his reign of terror, running the Empire in the Original Trilogy before he’s saved by his long-lost son Luke Skywalker. It's his last act of defiance on The Clone Wars, leaving Ahsoka and Rex in a lurch as he flies away to safety--only to be seen again in Rebels.
In addition, the animators render Anakin’s rage-filled eyes as visible behind the blood-hued lenses of Vader’s helmet as he surveys the burial mound. The Clone Wars will return for its seventh and final season on February 21st. Years before Ahsoka affirms aloud to herself that she cannot save her master, Vader learns, by gazing at Ahsoka’s bird on the snowy moon, that her existence will continue elsewhere without him.
Even though her intentions were to keep them safe, when it comes to war, nobody's life is assured. It is no coincidence that the time period of the Clone Wars is the most explored period in the Star Wars expanded universe.

Indeed, that was the original purpose of the show itself, so it is only natural that the crime underworld we see in Solo and the Rebel cells from Rogue One and Rebels would originate during the wars that forever changed the shape of the galaxy. Darth Vader taking the saber represents Anakin’s love for his first spiritual child, Ahsoka.
