This whole trilogy could have been a bold reboot without having to be a liability for the original classic characters such as luke, han, leia,yoda, lando,c3p0, r2d2, Palpatine,stormtroopers, rebels, etc. I kind of think you can do a KOTOR-era big picture and have it work pretty well. Well, we got half of that. Apparently Lucas had always intended there to be a sequel trilogy, I would love to know what he had in mind for the story. There may be some reason for this written into a book or comic book at a later date, but going only off the movies, it seems unlikely. I watched the last two films of the OT right before Episode 9, and Luke was definitely more resembling a Mary Sue than Rey. Palpatine's presence was felt by Ren.
